Southern California sits next in line. Fox 5 San Diego, citing the National Weather Service, reported that south and southwest facing beaches will feel swell from Genevieve beginning Wednesday, with the strongest energy arriving Thursday as the swell angle rotates toward the south and southwest. Surf building to 10 to 14 feet is forecast in the most exposed zones, and advisories are posted through at least July 29, with elevated surf likely persisting into the weekend.
Hawaii faces a separate problem from a separate storm. Hurricane Fausto, weakening from Category 2 toward Category 1, is forecast to pass about 80 miles north of Honolulu on Wednesday, driving surf of 10 to 15 feet onto north facing shores, Yale Climate Connections reported. Lifeguard agencies across both regions have urged swimmers to respect closures, since long-period hurricane swell produces powerful rip currents even under sunny skies.
Fourth Category 5 in a Sprinting Global Season
Genevieve's brief peak extends a striking global tally. Tropical Cyclone Horacio reached 160 mph in the South Indian Ocean on February 23. Super Typhoon Sinlaku hit 185 mph on April 12, killing 17 people and causing an estimated 1.5 billion dollars in damage across the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam.
