It is a serious undertaking even for well-equipped crews. Race boats make the trip with shore support, position tracking and safety inspections. Cruisers attempting the passage alone enjoy none of that infrastructure, which is why offshore instructors treat the route's emptiness, rather than its weather, as the defining hazard. For roughly two weeks, the passage went to plan. Then a spell of strong winds and rough seas snapped the mast of his 32-foot boat, Newsweek reported. Dismasting ranks among the most feared failures in offshore sailing. In a single stroke it removes a sailboat's primary propulsion, leaves broken spars and rigging thrashing alongside the hull, and converts a capable ocean passagemaker into a raft at the mercy of wind and current.
Sato responded the way most sailors would. He started his auxiliary motor and tried to press on toward the islands. But a 32-foot cruiser carries nowhere near enough fuel to motor across an ocean, and the tank soon ran dry, according to Fox 5 San Diego. His phone died as well. He fought the psychological slide with the only tools available. Survival researchers have long identified that kind of mental discipline, more than any single piece of equipment, as the factor separating castaways who endure from those who give up.
Jury Rig That Changed the Odds
What most distinguishes Sato's case is that he did not simply wait to be found. Using PVC pipes and kayak paddles lashed into a makeshift rig, he fashioned an improvised sail capable of catching enough wind to give the crippled boat steerage. Over days of slow, deliberate progress he worked his way back toward the shipping lane his drift had pulled him away from, Hawaii News Now reported.
