Federal investigators have tied 98 laboratory-confirmed Salmonella Enteritidis infections across 17 states to shell eggs produced on two Texas farms, an outbreak that had been accumulating cases for eight months before a single carton was pulled from a grocery shelf.

Midwest Poultry Services, L.P., an Indiana-based egg producer, announced a voluntary recall on July 22 covering 1,589,577 dozen shell eggs, roughly 19 million individual eggs. Two days later the Food and Drug Administration published an outbreak notice naming the company's product as a likely source of illness in a multistate investigation that the agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had already been running. The salmonella egg recall now ranks among the largest in the United States since 2010, and the epidemiological record attached to it raises harder questions than the recall notice itself answers.

According to the FDA, 26 of the 98 confirmed patients have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Illness onset dates run from November 21, 2025 through June 30, 2026, a window of more than seven months. The recalled eggs, by contrast, were produced and distributed only between June 6 and July 3, 2026. That mismatch is the single most consequential detail in the file, and federal investigators have acknowledged it in unusually direct language.

Outbreak Larger Than Its Recall

Traceback work, whole genome sequencing and interview data converged on Midwest Poultry Services, but the FDA has stated plainly that the company does not account for all the illnesses under investigation. Of 44 patients interviewed by public health officials, 40, or 91 percent, reported eating shell eggs in the days before falling ill, a rate far above what would be expected by chance in a general population survey.

Samples collected by the firm at its Texas facilities tested positive for salmonella, and sequencing showed that some of those isolates match the outbreak strain, according to the CDC's investigation notice. That is strong evidence of a genuine link. It is not, however, evidence that the link is exclusive. Cases have been recorded in states where the recalled cartons were never distributed, which points either to secondary transmission, to product moving through channels outside the identified retail footprint, or to a second contaminated source that investigators have not yet isolated.

Case ascertainment lags are also material. The CDC has cautioned that the tally understates the real burden, noting that the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses. Most people infected with salmonella recover without seeking care or submitting a stool sample, and the agency estimates that confirming an outbreak link typically takes three to four weeks from the date a person becomes ill. On that arithmetic, illnesses occurring in mid-July would not surface in official counts until well into August.

Codes, Brands and Store Shelves

The recalled product consists of white shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs sold in bulk and in retail packs of 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 60. Sell-by or best-by dates fall between July 20 and August 17, 2026, meaning a meaningful share of the run was still inside its labelled shelf life when the recall was issued.

Brand names on the affected cartons include Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire's, Country Morning and Sunups. Kroger sold the eggs in Texas and Louisiana. Brookshire Grocery Company distributed them in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Smaller independent retailers also received product.

Identification depends on plant coding rather than brand. Only cartons carrying the code P-1950 or 0840962, together with a Julian date between 157 and 184, are covered. Those codes are printed on the left or right side of the carton in date-coding ink, not on the label face where consumers habitually look. Anyone holding eggs matching that description is advised to discard them or return them for a refund, and to wash surfaces and containers that touched them.

Midwest Poultry Services said it identified the problem through proactive environmental monitoring practices and root cause analysis, according to CBS News, and has paused distribution from the two Texas farms. The company's initial recall notice stated that no illnesses had been reported in connection with the product. The FDA linked the eggs to the outbreak two days later.

Texas at Center of Case Count

Geographic distribution in this outbreak is extraordinarily lopsided. Marler Clark, the food safety law firm now investigating claims on behalf of patients, published a state-by-state breakdown showing 73 of the 98 confirmed cases in Texas. Louisiana accounts for five, Arizona for four, and Georgia and New Mexico for two each. California, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina and West Virginia have reported one case apiece.

That concentration matters for two reasons. It corroborates the traceback, since Texas is where the implicated farms operate and where the heaviest retail distribution occurred. It also indicates that the outbreak is, in practical terms, a Texas public health event with a national tail. Bill Marler, the attorney who built his practice on the 1993 Jack in the Box E. coli litigation, put it bluntly in a statement on the firm's site: "Seventy-three sick Texans is not a rounding error."

Single-case states complicate the picture rather than simplifying it. Several of them, including New York, Michigan and West Virginia, sit far outside the six-state distribution area disclosed in the recall. Sequencing can place an isolate within an outbreak cluster without explaining how a patient in one of those states encountered the strain. Investigators have said additional work is under way to determine whether other sources are contributing.

Antibiotic Resistance Narrows Treatment Options

Sequencing has produced a second finding with direct clinical consequences. Based on whole genome sequencing analysis, isolates from all 98 patients showed predicted non-susceptibility to ciprofloxacin and predicted resistance to nalidixic acid, according to the CDC investigation update.

Most salmonella infections do not require antibiotics. Healthy adults typically recover within four to seven days with fluids and rest. Antibiotics are reserved for severe cases, bloodstream infections and patients at elevated risk, and fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin are among the standard first choices for adults. A resistance profile of this kind pushes clinicians toward alternative agents and can delay effective treatment in exactly the patients least able to absorb the delay, namely children under five, adults over 65 and the immunocompromised.

Twenty-six hospitalizations out of 98 confirmed cases is a hospitalization rate above 26 percent, higher than the roughly 20 percent that CDC surveillance typically records for salmonellosis outbreaks. Some of that gap reflects ascertainment bias, since sicker patients are more likely to be tested and counted. The resistance profile is a plausible contributing factor and one that state health departments will be examining closely.

Inside the Egg, Not on It

Salmonella Enteritidis occupies a distinctive place in food microbiology because it can colonize the reproductive tissue of a laying hen and be deposited inside the egg before the shell forms. Washing and surface sanitation, which address contamination picked up in the barn or on the packing line, do nothing about an organism already sealed within the albumen. That biology is why the federal framework for shell eggs targets the flock and the house rather than the finished product, and why environmental monitoring of poultry houses sits at the center of the compliance regime.

It also explains the persistence of the problem across producers and states. A house that harbours the organism in its dust, rodent population or manure pits can seed contaminated eggs at low frequency over long periods, producing exactly the pattern seen here: a small number of infections per month, spread across a wide catchment, invisible to any individual clinician and detectable only through genomic surveillance.

Egg Safety Rule Under Strain

Since 2010, large shell egg producers in the United States have operated under a federal egg safety rule requiring biosecurity controls, rodent and pest management, chick procurement standards, routine environmental testing for Salmonella Enteritidis in poultry houses, egg testing when environmental samples come back positive, and refrigeration at or below 45 degrees Fahrenheit during storage and transport. The rule was written after the 2010 recall of roughly half a billion eggs from Iowa producers, an episode that remains the benchmark for regulatory failure in the sector.

Midwest Poultry Services says its own environmental monitoring flagged the contamination, which is the rule functioning as designed at the detection stage. The eight-month span of illness onsets suggests the system performed less well at the interdiction stage. Environmental testing detects the organism in a house; it does not by itself remove eggs already in commerce, and the interval between a positive house sample and a market withdrawal is where consumer exposure accumulates.

This is the third significant shell egg outbreak in roughly a year. In June 2025, the FDA and CDC investigated Salmonella Enteritidis infections tied to brown cage-free and organic eggs from August Egg Company of Hilmar, California. That outbreak involved 134 confirmed cases across 10 states, 38 hospitalizations and one death. In August 2025, Country Eggs, LLC recalled cage-free brown eggs sold under several California brands after a separate investigation. Three outbreaks in thirteen months, from three unrelated producers in different states, points to a systemic vulnerability rather than a single bad operator.

Prices, Flocks and Bird Flu Risk

Commercially, the recall lands in an unusually soft egg market. Retail egg prices averaged about $2.50 a dozen in the March 2026 Consumer Price Index, down 58 percent from a year earlier and the lowest level since late 2023, according to USDA data reported by agricultural outlets. By May 2026 the average had eased further to roughly $2.19, down 35 percent year on year. CNBC reported in May that oversupply had driven wholesale prices in some regions below a dollar a dozen, squeezing producer margins.

Supply recovered because the national table egg layer flock rebuilt from about 292 million birds in March 2025 to roughly 308 million a year later, after highly pathogenic avian influenza drove the flock to record lows during the 2025 price spike. That recovery is not secure. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service confirmed H5N1 detections in commercial poultry across 12 states as of its June 2026 update, and Texas layer facilities, while spared so far, sit on major waterfowl migration corridors.

A producer operating on thin margins in an oversupplied market faces a different calculus around voluntary withdrawal than one enjoying scarcity pricing. Roughly 1.6 million dozen eggs pulled at current wholesale levels represents a direct write-off in the low single-digit millions of dollars, before litigation and reputational costs. That the recall was initiated proactively is worth noting; that it followed months of accumulating illness is the counterweight.

Traceback Timeline Problem

Outbreak investigations in the United States move at the speed of the slowest link in the chain, and the shell egg supply chain contains several slow links. A patient must seek care, be tested, and have an isolate sequenced and uploaded to the national PulseNet database. State health departments must interview patients, often weeks after the meals in question. Traceback requires distribution records from retailers, distributors and packers that are frequently paper-based at the farm end.

In this case the earliest confirmed illness dates to November 21, 2025. The recall was issued on July 22, 2026. Even allowing for the reality that the November and December cases may belong to an earlier, unrecalled production window, the interval represents eight months in which a genetically defined cluster was expanding without a public warning attached to a specific product.

Retailers carry part of the operational burden once a recall is announced. Loyalty card records give large chains the ability to notify identified purchasers directly, a capability that barely existed at scale during the 2010 recall. It reaches only shoppers who used a card, and not at all the eggs sold in bulk to restaurants, bakeries and institutional kitchens, which absorb a substantial share of shell egg volume and rarely retain carton coding once product is decanted.

Food safety specialists have long argued that shell eggs are among the hardest products to trace because they are commingled, repacked under multiple private labels and coded in ways consumers cannot read without instruction. This outbreak illustrates the point precisely: five brand names, seven pack sizes, two plant codes and a Julian date range, all printed in ink on the side of a carton most shoppers discard the day they open it.

Unresolved Threads in the Investigation

Three questions remain open. First, whether a second source is contributing cases, which the FDA has explicitly flagged as under investigation. Second, whether the case count will climb materially once the reporting lag clears, which the CDC's own guidance on three to four week confirmation delays makes likely. Third, whether the November 2025 to May 2026 cases can be tied to earlier production runs from the same farms, a finding that would widen the recall and sharpen questions about how long the organism persisted in the houses.

For consumers the guidance is unchanged and unglamorous. Check carton codes against the recall notice, discard or return matching product rather than cooking it, refrigerate eggs promptly, and cook them until yolks and whites are firm. Anyone with diarrhea accompanied by a fever above 102 degrees Fahrenheit, bloody stools, persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration should seek medical care, and should mention the salmonella egg recall to the treating clinician given the resistance profile now documented in this cluster.

For the industry the implications are broader. Three outbreaks in thirteen months, a hospitalization rate above the historical norm, and a resistant strain circulating in commercial layer houses together suggest that the 2010 rule, written for a different flock structure and a different retail landscape, is due for a hard look. The FDA has not signaled a rulemaking. The case file being assembled in Texas may make one difficult to avoid.
