Forty million Americans spent Sunday under extreme heat warnings as the second heat dome of the summer parked itself over the center of the country, pushing heat indexes above 105 degrees Fahrenheit along a corridor running from Minnesota to Mississippi. The National Weather Service said the danger zone stretched west into southern California and Nevada, where forecasters warned that isolated desert readings could approach 120 degrees.
The alerts covered a second consecutive day of hazardous conditions, the Associated Press reported, with high temperatures and heavy humidity pressing on large sections of the central and southern United States on July 26. Bob Oravec, a lead forecaster at the National Weather Service, told the AP the pattern was "affecting a lot of people right in the middle of the country," and said the core of the heat would sink southward early in the coming week.
The starkest single reading arrived a day earlier in Rapid City, South Dakota, which reached 112 degrees on Saturday, an all-time high for the city, according to the weather service. In Shakopee, Minnesota, officials at Canterbury Park canceled a weekend horse racing card rather than run animals, jockeys and track crews through the hottest hours of the afternoon.
Anatomy of a stalled atmosphere
Meteorologists attribute the episode to a heat dome, a sprawling ridge of high pressure that compresses air, suppresses cloud cover and recirculates warmth until temperatures climb far beyond seasonal norms. Because the ridge deflects storm systems around its perimeter, it tends to reorganize weather across the whole continent at once. Oravec made a version of that point to the AP, observing that a dome over one part of the country reliably produces corresponding weather somewhere else.
This is the second such structure to organize over the United States since late June. The first anchored itself over the East around the Independence Day holiday, a stretch in which Atlantic City tied its all-time record of 106 degrees. A successor built over the West by mid-July and has since drifted toward the Plains, rewriting local climatology as it moved. Miles City, Montana, touched 115 degrees on July 12, the same day Salt Lake City and Sheridan, Wyoming, each logged all-time highs of 109 degrees, while Phoenix held at 113 degrees for three consecutive days in early July, according to weather service records compiled in public chronologies of the event.
The persistence matters as much as the peaks. The contiguous United States has just recorded its second-hottest first half of a year since record keeping began, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information, and July has extended the anomaly rather than eased it.
Counting the human toll
Public health guidance during the weekend followed a familiar script: seek air conditioning or a cooling center, drink water steadily rather than in bursts, and limit direct sun exposure. The AP noted that children, older adults and people with chronic medical conditions face elevated risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, the latter a medical emergency in which the body loses the ability to regulate its own temperature.
The season's toll is already measurable. Tallies assembled from state reports since late June place the summer's heat-linked death count above 40, with New Jersey alone accounting for 29. Epidemiologists generally treat such figures as a floor rather than a ceiling, because heat is chronically underreported as a contributing cause on death certificates and excess-mortality analyses tend to surface additional cases months later.

The economic accounting is slower still. Prolonged heat suppresses outdoor labor productivity, raises hospital admissions and pushes electricity demand toward the edge of system design limits, costs that rarely appear in a single line item but accumulate across utility bills, insurance claims and municipal budgets.
Storms along the dome's wet edge
Extreme heat is only half of the pattern. Around the rim of the ridge, saturated air has repeatedly collided with stalled frontal boundaries, and CNN reported that forecasters logged 15 flash flood emergencies in a recent two-week span, putting July within reach of a monthly record for the most severe category of flood warning the weather service issues.
West Virginia absorbed the worst of it. A flash flood emergency carrying the weather service's rare particularly dangerous situation designation covered Lewis, Randolph and Upshur counties, and Fox Weather reported that Sand Run, a creek near Buckhannon, rose more than 8 feet in under five hours before cresting at 10.63 feet, well beyond the 8.34-foot record set in 1985. Two deaths were confirmed and a state of emergency was declared as first responders fielded hundreds of calls for help.
More water may be queued behind it. CNN reported that moisture associated with Tropical Storm Bertha, interacting with a stalled front over the southern Mid-Atlantic and the Carolinas, could deliver up to a month's worth of rain through the weekend. Missouri had already absorbed a 1,000-year rainfall event earlier in the month, and Utah saw flooding race across a wildfire burn scar, terrain that sheds water because scorched soil absorbs almost none of it.
Smoke overhead, strain below
The same blocking pattern has funneled Canadian wildfire smoke deep into the northern tier of the country. At one point in mid-July, CNN reported, at least 120 million people from Minnesota to Massachusetts sat under air quality warnings, an exposure event on a scale that public health agencies once treated as exceptional and now plan for annually.
Infrastructure built for a cooler baseline has been tested throughout. During the eastern phase of the event in early July, utilities logged more than a million customer outages as violent storms broke down the first ridge, and Amtrak slowed trains on the Northeast Corridor to protect heat-stressed rails, according to accounts compiled in public chronologies of the event. Grid operators in the East reported demand flirting with records that had stood for nearly two decades.
Forecasters expect the core of the heat to slide toward the Gulf Coast states in the coming days, giving the Upper Midwest a measure of relief by midweek. The larger pattern offers less comfort. A single season has now produced two long-lived heat domes, a near-record count of flash flood emergencies, continental-scale smoke and a string of all-time temperature records from Montana to New Jersey. That is not a sequence of discrete emergencies so much as a compounding weather regime, and the second half of the summer will test how much redundancy the country's power grids, emergency rooms and municipal budgets actually hold.
